Housing: When the decision to grant leave to remain is given, a refugee is given twenty-five days’ notice to quit their Home Office provided accommodation.
As refugees they are not entitled to any preferential treatment on Council housing lists. Often, because of a delay in issuing a National Insurance number, they are unable to sign for a tenancy and become homeless.
Work/Benefits: A refugee has the same rights and duties as any UK citizen. They can claim benefits, although there is often a long delay while they wait for a National Insurance number (NIN), and if healthy are under the same obligation to seek work as anyone else.
